Praying While You Work

Praying While You Work

My 5-year old son was standing quietly watching me steam clean our floor one evening, which I just figured was amazing in itself since I do it so infrequently. But after a few minutes he said, “Hey mom, if you say a prayer and then steam comes out, then your prayer can rise to heaven on the steam.” I was floored (pun intended) that he would make such a connection between work and prayer. “Yes,” I replied,  “Steam cleaning the floor can become a prayer to God!”

Growth Spurts

For those of you who follow the blog regularly, you know that last fall I wrote a lot about being pregnant. Then, at the end of December we welcomed our baby girl into the world and now I have to write a post about nursing.

This Marriage Prep is different, and here’s why

This Marriage Prep is different, and here’s why

In speaking to a group of priests on February 25th, Pope Francis urged that during marriage prep, couples must be helped to understand “the profound meaning of the step that they are about to take. . . They say yes, but do they understand this? Do they have faith in this? A true catechumenate is needed for the sacrament of marriage.”

Heaven is Full of Legos

Heaven is Full of Legos

The other day my 5 year old announced that he didn’t want to go to heaven. That’s problematic for several reasons, mainly because of the salvation of his soul, but as Catholic parents we teach him that heaven is our ultimate goal. We talk about how the saints are in heaven with God and therefore we want to be a saint, too.

Caught Between Heaven and Earth: A Reflection on Death

Caught Between Heaven and Earth: A Reflection on Death

In what seems like a lifetime ago, I used to work as a youth minister for a Church. In my last few years there I had a girl in youth group, shy with braces, who was pushed by her parents to attend with her sister and step-sister. She came on retreats and mission trips and I saw a beautiful young woman start to emerge, but I lost contact with her in my whirlwind of birthing babies. Last week I received the news that at the age of 21, she died in a car accident.

“As the family goes, so goes the nation..."

As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live.” – St. John Paul II
Last week I wrote on the basics of spiritual warfare: the battle for our souls is real, something we must all engage in by virtue of our baptism, and Jesus is the only one who can win this war.

Did you know that we are fighting a war? I’m not talking about a war with another country, but a war within ourselves.

Marriage: Did You Know?

Marriage: Did You Know?

It’s trivia time! There seems to be a trend on TV these days – from Parks and Rec to The Office, Gilmore Girls to Grey’s Anatomy- that the romantic thing to do is to impulsively get married in private and then have a big ceremony with friends. And with many shows, and in the case of a recent episode of Last Man Standing, the venue was switched last minute from the Church to a retail store where the family worked, which apparently was more meaningful.

Looking Forward to the Resurrection of our Bodies

Looking Forward to the Resurrection of our Bodies

In Advent, while we think back to 2,000+ years ago when our Savior was born, we also think ahead to our future. We turn our gaze to the second coming of Christ, to our mortality, and to the judgment day after our death.

Ready Or Not, Here He Comes!

Ready Or Not, Here He Comes!

Right now I have family members who are putting their house on the market. They have been busy packing up and keeping things clean for their open house and subsequent showings. Their house needs to be in order so they are ready at any moment for someone to come take a look. They are busy preparing for when their house sells.
