Looking at others

airport

Dear Ron,

We married in August 1999, both aged 20, we dated two years before marriage. Tom is a cradle Catholic, Anna raised Lutheran. Not much premarital counseling due to our mixed faith marriage. In year five of marriage, we vacationed with Anna's two girlfriends to Maui. At the time, they were both single. We brought our 15-month-old with us.

Fire Tornadoes and Trusting in God

fire

The males in my household are really into the Slo-Mo guys. These two guys have a YouTube channel in which they come up with new ideas of things to video in slow motion: spinning cds, bursting water balloons, etc. My personal favorite is their fire tornado, where they put a bunch of fans in a circle around an open flame. The air from the fans stokes the flame and spins it around in a huge, long column. The fire looks wild and out of control, until you see it up close and in slow motion.

Bonding Bucket List

Bucket_list_20054800529

The other night my husband and I were discussing our bucket lists. Mine went something like this: go to the Grand Canyon, go to the Sand Dunes, go on a cruise, travel to Europe…
His bucket list was a little different: go heli-skiing, go skydiving, go parasailing, get a motorcycle…
Since I am deathly afraid of heights and he gets motion sickness, it doesn’t sound like we will be accomplishing many of our bucket list items together.

The Wonder of Corpus Christi

Jesus-Christ-from-Hagia-Sophi_20170622-205207_1

There's never an excuse nor reason not to pray and I always think the string of feasts from Pentecost through to the Blessed Trinity, Corpus Christi and the Sacred Heart of Jesus are more than enough impetus to get down on one's knees and adore, love, and hope in the Loving God.

Matrimony Does Not Mean Legal Roommates

Seth-and-Savannah-K_20170616-210606_1

Often today if a man and woman want to get married, they first live together to see if they would be a good fit. To a lot of people, it makes sense to see if you are “compatible” before marriage, but really the opposite is true.

The Secret To Conversion

duccio-coronamento-della-maest

The Church recently celebrated Pentecost, which is one of my favorite holy days of the year. Perhaps it’s because I was born around Pentecost, but the more likely reason is because I have a close relationship with the Holy Spirit.

These Last Remaining Hours of May

Our_Lady_of_Fatima

Amidst all the endless commentary in the aftermath of the atrocity that happened in my home town of Manchester, England, on Monday night the 22nd, and the appalling murder of the Coptic Christians on Friday on pilgrimage in Egypt, I could not help but wonder on, 100 years after the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima and her universal message of conversion and penance to save the world, how her Immaculate Heart must be in pain and sorrow over the events of the last weeks.

In the Beginning, It Was Not So

Le_Mans_-_Cathedrale_St_Julien_CV_01

Quite possibly my favorite line in our marriage prep program is when we describe the fall of Adam and Eve and how sin damaged the partnership that God wanted from them. Well, not exactly the part where they sin, but what comes next: We are not stuck in sin! Jesus saves us and restores us in God’s original plan through the Sacraments.

Why?

WHY

Children have the remarkably annoying habit of interrogating us don’t they? They’re obsessed with the fundamental nature of things, why the world is the way it is, and how to logically connect it all together. The endless “why”? questions. It can be maddening at times.

Moana’s Journey Is Our Journey

Moana

Our kids are crazy for the Disney movie Moana right now. They sing the songs at the top of their lungs, quote the movie, and even pretend to be the different characters while they are playing with each other. And who can blame them? A funny chicken, catchy tunes, and a life-changing adventure make for a great story.
