It is striking that non-Western – and often non-Christian – people seem to be able to teach us essential lessons about life. Lately, two encounters with non-European women have made me question our individualistic lifestyles in a particular way.
Not the Destination...
When I was in high school, I always wished I was two years older. In my youth group, most of my friends were two years older than I was. I wanted so badly to be the same age as them: to get my license when they did, to stay out as late as they did, to graduate when they did. I could not wait for college.
Our kids are crazy for the Disney movie Moana right now. They sing the songs at the top of their lungs, quote the movie, and even pretend to be the different characters while they are playing with each other. And who can blame them? A funny chicken, catchy tunes, and a life-changing adventure make for a great story.
