The Silence of Love

couple-915983_960_720

When I was in college, I had friends that began dating their freshman year. I remember passing them in the hallway between classes our junior year. They were right in the middle of the hallway, just staring into each other’s eyes. I stopped to talk to a friend, and then passed by this couple again five minutes later to get to class.  They were still staring into each other’s eyes, not saying a word. It was so striking to me that I remember it a dozen years later. At that time, it made me feel uncomfortable to think of staring another person in the eyes so close for that long, but perhaps it’s because I had never been in love yet.

God Desires Intimacy

Every month, my parish hosts a night of adoration with music, benediction, and confessions in the Church. They also offer pizza beforehand and free babysitting during (Parishes! Take note!), so it’s an offer that’s hard to refuse. After my husband and I dropped off the kids in the nursery, we went to pray in the Church. During adoration, there was a long period of silence in which I had a vision that was extremely vivid and spoke to me profoundly.

He might not give you a million dollars, but God will provide

Bebe-Sam

In a discussion about NFP, a couple in our marriage prep course told us this:

There’s also the fear of having a child before being ready. And no, God is not going to give me millions of dollars because it will help me prepare for the child. So don’t tell me that god will provide. He provided me with intellect, and abilities to survive and make something of myself. With my intellect, I will be using birth control.”

Well, if we all had to be “ready” to have a baby, not many of us would have children at all!

Forget the Tumble-Weed Life

Forget the Tumble-Weed Life

I saw Beauty and the Beast recently. I know, I know, spear me. I’m not going to get into the whole ‘gay’ thing, because that’s not what I’m here for. Besides which, I think, if anything else, the gay community should kinda take it as an insult that of all the characters, Disney picked Le Fou, an idiot, coward, and a villain, to represent them. Anyway. There was another message, buried much deeper, that will hurt our children and our society much, much more in the long run. Spoilers coming, but since the movie really hasn’t got much new on the old one, I think this is safe water to tread.

SWSWSW-N

SWSWSW-N

You're probably thinking what on earth do the letters above mean? Is it a typo?

I heard this on the news on the radio this morning. It is the working motto of the chief executive of a call centre. This is his mantra to his staff who are trying to generate new customers by phoning them up.  When the other person either puts the phone down, ends the call abruptly or is just not interested, he wants them to go through this thought process.

So what does SWSWSW-N mean?

“Some will, some won't. So what! Next.”

In other words, it's the philosophy that says, "if at first, you don't succeed, try, try and try again. In the words of Our Lord, “shake the dust from your feet."

So, when despite all your best efforts to achieve something important by persuasion, advocacy or persistence, you just don't get anywhere, then SWSWSW -N might be a useful mechanism for emotional resilience to obstinacy.

That's not an excuse to give up totally on individuals because the Lord never does, even if He has to wait and wait and wait.

One day we may need patience and forbearance of another. So, let's never give the other an excuse to think SWSWSW-N.

Wow!!!  Yes, that is the correct word to begin this blog post!  I think I am still in shock!  On the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus our country just experienced the overturning of an almost 50-year-old law regarding abortion.  Roe vs. Wade was overturned!
