When God made a covenant with the people of Israel, they swore fidelity to him on their very lives (see Exodus 24:7-8). In the same way, a man and woman who choose to marry bind themselves, both in their free consent and in their sexual union. They swear fidelity; they promise openness to children; they promise their whole selves. In so doing they create an unbreakable covenant bond.
